“"Lantern Keepers" Deep in the Tianshan Mountains

Winding through Xinjiang's vast deserts and mountains, the Jinghe-Huoerguosi Railway stretches 286 kilometers. This line is not only the "lifeline" connecting the Ili River Valley to the outside world, but also a key railway corridor in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Along this railway, a group of "lantern keepers" in orange uniforms carry equipment over mountains to ensure the safe operation of power supply facilities. They are the contact network maintenance team at the Subutai duty point of the Yining Power Supply Workshop, Urumqi Power Supply Depot, CR-Urumqi.

Opened in 2009, the Jinghe-Huoerguosi Railway is Xinjiang's first electrified railway and the region's second international railway corridor to the west. By 2024, it had seen an average of 22 CRE trains daily. The Subutai duty point safeguards 65 kilometers of power lines and over 300 poles. Countless sleepless nights and bustling mornings at the duty point witness their dedication to this line.

As fully loaded CRE trains roar past, Zheng Jingang says, "The sound of the wind is the best recognition of our work."
